Pernik region

 

        The Pernik region is situated in the South-western part of Bulgaria, 30 km far from Sofia at the main cross-road Sofia-Thessalonoki-Skopje. It occupies an area of 2390.5 sqkm, representing 2.1% from the country's territory.
It is known from the history that in the past Pernik was an storm-proof fortress, residence of the famous voivode (leader) Krakra, who thousands of year ago, the only one left unconquered by the Byzanyine emperor Vassilius the Second, called latter Bulgarian-killer. He obeyed at last the state of Samuil with unprecedented cruelty.

The main fortress of Krakra is situated on the high plateau, supporting the settlement from south-west, but the voivode commanded 35 fortress in the surrounding mountains, where at two huge Byzantine army proved powerless. The fortified settlement was the centre of the martial Tracian tribe agrians. Here is reveajed a palace - a lagre hall with columns, water-lines, refined clay vessels and coin from V - IV century B.C.

        In administrative aspect the region has 171 populated settlements, including 6 towns and 164 villages, distributed in six territorial municipal administrations: Pernik, Radomir, Breznik, Zemen, Trun and Kovatchevtzy. The density of population is 68 people per sqkm at an average 76 people for the country. The population of the region is 156 561 people, from which 76 893 men and 79 668 women, differetiated in 60 183 households. Mostly, the population 74.1% lives in the towns. From the total number of population 24 935 or 15.9% are bellow the active age, 87 569 or 55.9% are in active age and 44 057 or 28.2% are over the active age.

   The region has a greatly expressed regressive type demographic structure, demonstrated in a progressive decreasing of population in the low and mid age groups and increasing in the high age groups, with low level of birth-rate and a high level of death-rate and stable tendency of negative natural growth of population.

        In economy, all brances of the material production are practiced, as a leading role has the iron and steel metallurgy- 46.5% from the total sales of industrial products, power and thermal energy - 15.1%, machine-building and metalworking industry -12.8% etc. The employee people are 52 606, as only in industrial branch are 28 931 people. The employees in non-productive sphere are 10 668 people with predominating relative share of the women - 74.7%.

     The total number of the registered state and private firms is 9 943, from which 6 981 are private firms. Actualy, the active firms are considerably less and its relative share in the regional economy is nerely 10.3% with predominating commercial and construction business. In complicated economic conditions 57 industrial enterprases, 20 construction, 7 transport and 54 agricultural organizations work.

    In the region's territory variety of productions are  creating. Here coal are mined, different steel profiles, universal technics, weak current transformers, electronic elements-magnets and ferrite, different kinds of glass and cement are produced. The production of ready-to-wear cloths and different types knitted goods is practiced.  


Перник - пл. Кракра

In the town of Pernik is the only plant in the Balkan Peninsula for production of pectin, parallelly in production of fruit concentrate , pasteurized juices and nectars.
The economic structure in the region during the recent years is characterized with a relative low level of production and realization of finished products,

 increasing unemployment, reaching 10 276 people, from witch 5 602 women, due to imperfect using of production capacities of the enterprises, financial difficulties, insovency of the clients and unprovided stable home markets and foreign countries markets.
